Our guided Pico de Orizaba climb is one of SWS Mountain Guide’s oldest and most popular expeditions with over 20 Expeditions to Pico de Orizaba. Our trip to Mexico is an exciting mix of sightseeing, mountaineering, traveling and enjoying the Mexican culture. Pico de Orizaba (18,851 ft.) and Iztaccihauatl (17,342 ft.) are both excellent introductions to high altitude mountaineering and a big step toward advancing your climbing skills and high altitude experience.
From Pueblo, we first climb Mexico’s third highest peak Iztaccihuatl (17,342 ft). Named by the ancient Aztecs for the story of a mythological princess, Iztaccihuatl is a classic volcanic snow climb. This peak is the perfect “warm up” laying directly across the valley from the very active Volcano Popocateptl. Our program includes several days of acclimatization working towards our final goal of Pico de Orizaba. Down time in between climbing instruction is spent exploring the areas various markets and sites during our travels.
We then travel farther east to Mexico’s highest summit, Pico de Orizaba. Our main objective of this expedition is the dormant ice capped volcano standing at an impressive 18,851 ft.. From our trail head we will work our way up to a high camp at just over 16,000 ft. From here our final assault will continue up moderate snow and ice slopes steepening to a summit.
Come join us for a short and fun expedition exploring the high peaks of Mexico with your personally experienced Senior SWS Mountain guide on an ecologically sound mountaineering expedition in the heart of Mexico.
