Our most popular Winter Course, which allows you to expand your hiking and climbing seasons from the summer to the winter, spring, and fall seasons. Our Basic Winter Mountaineering course is enables you to build the skills needed for more advanced mountaineering adventures, whether expedition climbing, ski touring, snow-shoeing, or winter mountaineering on your local peaks. Designed to build basic skills for all types of winter adventurers; snow-shoers, skiers, snowboarders, climbers, and summer mountaineers wanting to expand their season. You will learn the fundamentals of establishing a winter camping, traveling over winter terrain, basic avalanche safety/rescue, winter survival, staying warm, winter route finding, and mountain safety as well as technical skills in ice ax self-arrest, crampon use, and basic rope travel. The course culminates with an winter attempt of Lassen Peak (10,462 ft) in Lassen Volcanic National Park, the southern most Volcano in the Cascade Range.

SWS Mountain Guides is offering a second location for our popular Basic Winter Mountaineering Course. We will be conducting this course in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, out of North Lake Trail-head, just east of Bishop, CA. just about 5 hrs north of Los Angeles, CA. or 4 1/2 hrs east of Las Vegas. We will attempt Mt. Goethe, 13,264 ft and/or Muriel Peak 12,942 ft. as the culmination of this winter course.
