SWS Mountain Guides, California Ski Guides & California Rock Guides are divisions of Sierra Wilderness Seminars Inc., our parent company. SWS Mountain Guides is co-owned by Timothy S. Keating (CEO), one of the original founders, and David Cressman (COO, Chief Operations Officer). David takes care of the day to day operations of SWS Mountain Guides out of our Mt. Shasta office. Our newest member of the management team is “JB” James Brown (CMO, Chief Marketing Officer), who takes care of the Social Media and Marketing Development needs of SWS Mountain Guides. Established in 1981 and heading into our 36th season, we are one of only three guide services to hold a commercial guiding permit on Mt. Shasta and one of 8 guides services to hold a permanent 10-year commercial guiding license on the Inyo National Forest. SWS is also one of 8 authorized guide services to conduct winter and summer mountaineering operations in the Inyo National Forest which includes Mt. Whitney. We are Insured by Worldwide Outfitters and Guides Association (WOGA) and hold valid commercial use licenses in the following National Parks and National Forest Service Wilderness Areas: Sequoia/King National Park, Lassen
Volcanic National Park, Yosemite National Park (Backpacking & Ski Touring only), Shasta / Trinity National Forests / Mt. Shasta Wilderness, Inyo National Forest / Golden Trout Wilderness / Ansel Adams Wilderness, Joshua Tree National Park and others where appropriate. SWS Mountain Guides has been offering rock climbing, ice climbing, glacier travel, alpine mountaineering, American Avalanche Association certified avalanche seminars (level I and level II), backcountry skiing, ski touring, and mountain ski descents throughout California for over 36 years. As well as 30 years of experience conducting International Expeditions to countries such as Nepal, Tanzania, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Russia.
All of our guides are rigidly screened for appropriate levels of expertise and are employees of SWS Mountain Guides and are required to annually attend our 3-day winter and summer guides training sessions and adhere to the policies of SWS Mountain Guides. All guides hold at the very least Wilderness First Responder and CPR certificates with some guides having advanced training such as EMT or Paramedic licenses. Winter guides hold certificates in Level I, Level II, and Level III Avalanche training and rescue. Our senior staff is trained in “Leave No Trace” techniques which are practiced on all courses. Many guides hold AMGA (American Mountain Guides Association) certifications or have taken AMGA Alpine, Rock, or Ski Guide courses. The majority of our staff hold Bachelors degrees in various subjects, including Outdoor Leadership, Outdoor Recreation, and Experiential Education. The average age of our guides is 35, with approximately 10-12 years of climbing, skiing, or mountaineering experience with some long-time guides having 25 years or more experience in the mountains.
